Empowerment of women: What does female empowerment mean?

Empowerment of women: What does female empowerment mean?

Let's talk about female empowerment

Female Empowerment is one of the trending words on the internet. Especially around International Women's Day and other important events, this strong expression is - and we are happy about it - present almost everywhere and quickly spreading its magic (or better: truth?).

We've all heard about it and support it, but what exactly does female empowerment mean? Where does the term come from and why is it so important?

Why is female empowerment important?

What does female empowerment mean?

There are many models that address the concept of female empowerment, and obviously diverse perspectives on it. It is a concept that exists on many levels, from an individual to a societal dimension and dimensions in between. “Female Empowerment” literally means the empowerment of women. At its core, it's about women receiving equal rights and opportunities worldwide. Female empowerment aims to strengthen women's rights and break down social, economic and political barriers that prevent women from achieving their full potential. It's about creating an environment where women are encouraged and supported to pursue their goals and raise their voices.

As a worldwide social and historical phenomenon, it is a concept of great importance and complexity. From what I found, and in my very humble opinion, Female Empowerment includes the following:

  • Promoting women's self-esteem

  • Self-determination: The ability to make your own decisions

  • The right to influence social change and the opportunity to redefine gender roles

  • Reflecting and accepting women's points of view and taking them seriously

  • Increasing the status of women through education, enlightenment, literacy and training

  • Focusing on what women have in common rather than seeing each other as competition

... and much more. For me, female empowerment is about gaining the freedom to pursue desired goals, no matter what they may be. It means the ability to take control, be active in making decisions and demand opportunities. It is a bold movement and there is no right or wrong definition for it, it is both a concept with a clear vision and a concept that anyone who is willing to join can join.

Women's Empowerment Principles

Gender equality is not only a human right, but also a crucial factor for economic progress and social development. Nevertheless, women around the world still face numerous challenges that limit their participation in the labor market and in society. To combat these inequalities and help companies play a more active role in empowering women, the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) were developed. These Principles are a set of seven principles designed to help companies promote Gender Equality and the empowerment of women in the workplace, marketplace and community. Essentially, they provide a framework to ensure that women are treated equally in all aspects of business. These include fair working conditions, equal pay, equal opportunities in leadership positions and protection against discrimination and sexual harassment. Developed by UN Women and the United Nations Global Compact, the WEPs serve as a guide for companies wanting to promote gender equality.

How to empower: This is how you can empower yourself and other women

Female empowerment begins with strengthening oneself and develops through the support of others. It's about freeing yourself from limiting beliefs and creating an environment in which women can develop their full potential. Here are some ideas on how you can empower yourself and other women:

Empower yourself:

  • Recognize your strengths: Take time to reflect on your skills, talents and successes. What are you particularly good at? What are you proud of?
  • Set goals: Define clear and achievable goals in different areas of life. What do you want to achieve? What are your dreams?
  • Strengthen your self-confidence: Speak positively to yourself, celebrate your successes and learn to deal with criticism constructively.
  • Educate yourself: Invest in your personal and professional development. Expand your knowledge and skills.
  • Set boundaries: Learn to say “no” and communicate your needs. Pay attention to your well-being.

Empower yourself and empower other women

Empowering other women:

  • Be a mentor: Share your knowledge and experiences with other women. Support them in their development.
  • Offer support: Be a listening ear for other women. Listen, encourage and offer practical help.
  • Celebrate Successes: Recognize and celebrate the successes of other women. Show your appreciation.
  • Connect: Build a strong network of women who support and inspire each other.
  • Speak up: Stand up for Gender equality. Speak out against discrimination and injustice.

By taking these steps, we can create a culture of support and empowerment where women can achieve their full potential and achieve their goals.
